Bench Acute I
Ross Straker graduated from the Design in Wood program at the Tasmanian School of Art, the University of Tasmania with a BFA in 1985 and a Master of Fine Arts in Design, 1992.
Since 2002, he has been teaching the Diploma in Arts and craft and Design at the Technical and Further Education Institution in Hobart.
In 2004, he received the Advance Diploma in Design and Technology from the institution. In 2003 Straker taught in the USA, at the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and at the Rhode Island School of Design.
He also undertook a residency as an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wisconsin; at the Cite Internationale Des Arts, Paris, France in 1993 and the Jam Factory, Adelaide in 1999. In 1994, he was a Research Associate at the Centre for Furniture Design, University of Tasmania & prior to this in 1986, an Honorary Research Associate.
He was a founding member and Board Member of the Designer Makers Co-operative, Hobart from 1998 to 2004 and a Board Member of the Tasmanian Design and Development Company from 1996 to 1999.
Since 1983, he has exhibited consistently in Solo and Group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Straker is represented in numerous collections through his commission work and has been the recipient of several major awards.
